ASEZ STAR hosted a forum in the Bronx to spread awareness about the importance of social etiquette among today’s youth. The event focused on how the demeanor, words, and actions of young people shape their interactions with others. Throughout the forum, student volunteers discussed the value of honesty, respect, and consideration in daily life. They emphasized that one small act of kindness can have a big impact on others.
Teaching Social Etiquette to Today’s Youth
The keynote speaker for the event was Ms. Cristina Asuncion, a teacher at Discovery High School with over 15 years of experience in education. She shared how social etiquette has shaped her life since childhood and how it has influenced her at various stages. The panel discussion included Ms. Asuncion, Captain Luz Garcia from the United States Air Force, and Ms. Carla Betancourt, Senior Staff Attorney at Bronx Legal Services. The panel focused on topics like managing difficult conversations, practicing etiquette across generations, and balancing honesty with politeness.
After the forum, guests had the chance to learn more about ASEZ STAR through informative panels. In addition, there were activities for guests to practice proper etiquette, including using the right tone of voice, sharing kind words, and expressing gratitude.
ASEZ STAR Promotes Social Etiquette and Building Character
The event allowed participants to connect with community leaders and learn how social etiquette can improve society. In the end, ASEZ STAR was honored with a Proclamation from NYS Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie. Yuriely Taveras, a 17-year-old attendee, shared, “The forum taught me a lot about myself and how my decisions and attitude can impact others. That’s why this social etiquette education inspired me to begin the change within me.”
Ms. Asuncion added, “As a high school teacher, I see the influence of social etiquette in all our students. We can tell apart the students that have been taught manners at home and those who have not. Etiquette has to be taught to our children. So, we as teachers have to teach it to our students and remind them that it will take them a long way in life.”
This forum was part of the ASEZ STAR Good Student Campaign, encouraging young people to build character and create a positive impact in their communities.
